Navarre Living
People have been cherishing the rich Navarre area for over 5,000 years. Native Americans were the first inhabitants of Santa Rosa Island and the Gulf Breeze Peninsula and they reaped the benefits of living near salt and fresh water and an abundance of natural resources. Spanish explorers landed in northwest Florida in 1559, and the area has since seen Spanish, English, French and early American settlers. The town was eventually named by Colonel Wyman after his wife’s favorite province in Spain.

Although the area has been populated for thousands of years, Navarre only developed as a community in the 1960s, when the Navarre Bridge was constructed. Hollywood found Navarre in the 1970s and used it as one of the settings for Steven Spielberg’s “Jaws II.”

Today, Santa Rosa County is the second fastest growing county in the state. Residents enjoy a temperate climate: winter highs in the 60s and summer highs in the 80s. There is also no better background for your family’s life adventures. As part of the Emerald Coast, Navarre certainly earns its title. Clear, clean azure-green water and expansive white beaches create an idyllic landscape for residents and tourists. Swimming, sunbathing, exercising and fishing are all popular on Navarre Beach.

If you are looking for more “extreme” entertainment, nearby Milton, “the Canoeing Capital of the World,” offers adventurers kayaking, canoeing and tubing on several rivers. In the Gulf, Navarre residents and tourists can scuba dive and snorkel. The area’s over 45 artificial reefs, including the USS Massachusetts, are home to thriving marine life.

For those looking for recreation on dry land, there are a number of championship golf courses in the Navarre area. Waterfront courses, such as Tiger Point East and West, challenge players of all skill levels. Navarre is also home to The Nature Walk, a one-mile waterfront trail complete with playground equipment and picnic benches. Panhandle Butterfly House, an extension of The Nature Walk, features 1200 native plants and 200 species of native butterflies. Many campgrounds are also available in the Navarre area, allowing campers to either rough it in the wilderness or take advantage of modern conveniences.

Navarre also boasts a calendar full of unique and entertaining events. For the athlete, the Navarre Annual Beach Run is held in January. Navarre also has festivals for almost every holiday, including the March Mardi Gras Parade/Krewe of Jesters at Navarre Beach and the Labor Day Chili Cookoff.

There are also endless attractions that are easily accessible from Navarre. Blackwater River State Park and Gulf Islands National Seashore both offer visitors huge samples of untouched, wild landscape. Eglin Air Force Base is also very near and provides thousands of acres to the public for boating, canoeing and camping. Eglin is also home to the Air Force Armament Museum, which features displays that date back to World War I.

Recreation and adventure are not the only appealing qualities of Navarre. Navarre has two airports within 30 minutes and travelers to New York City or Texas can take advantage of the intercoastal waterway. Students attending Santa Rosa County Schools can be proud that their district is consistently highly ranked among all districts in the state. Additionally, the majority of Santa Rosa’s schools have earned the grade of “A” in Florida’s A+ Plan.

Exceptional characteristics of Navarre, such as pristine beaches, endless entertainment and quality living, make it an alluring destination for tourists and new residents alike.
